A hole over 100 meters deep discovered on the surface of Mars could be a “portal” to alien life, according to astronomy experts.

The image, shared by NASA, shows a massive opening in the Martian landscape. “Holes like this are of particular interest because they may be portals to lower levels that extend into expansive underground caves,” the caption reads.

The caption was written by renowned astrophysicist Robert Nemiroff, professor of Physics at Michigan Technological University (MTU), and Jerry Bonnell, senior faculty member in the Astronomy Department at the University of Maryland.

“If so, these natural tunnels are relatively protected from Mars’ harsh surface, making them relatively good candidates for harboring Martian life. These pits are […] primary targets for future spacecraft, robots, and even human interplanetary explorers,” they added.

The image was originally captured in 2017 by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The reason behind the hole’s formation remains speculative, but experts believe it may have been caused by a meteor impact.

Still, it appears to be an excellent access point to the interior of the Red Planet, allowing scientists to explore the possibility of life beneath Mars’ surface.
