A 19-year-old died last Monday (26) after participating in an impact challenge that became a very popular trend on TikTok.
Ryan Satterthwaite, from New Zealand, died while taking part in the Run It trend, which involves placing two players in each corner of a court and having them run into each other in the middle.
The so-called “tackle game” is a practice widely used by rugby or American football players and is a contact game, meaning the goal is to collide with your opponent to see who is more resilient and able to knock down the other.
However, the game has been heavily criticized on social media because participants do not wear protective gear during collisions. This was exactly what caused Satterthwaite’s death.
While playing with his friends last Sunday (25), the young man suffered a serious head injury when he was knocked down. He was taken to a nearby hospital but did not survive.
“The death of this young man is an absolute tragedy and my thoughts are with his family and friends,” said Inspector Ross Grantham in an interview with The Guardian.
While the young people were playing on their own, there are official tournaments for this game. After the incident, Run It, which organizes tackle game competitions, made a statement about Satterthwaite’s death.
“Any contact sport […] should only be practiced in highly controlled environments that include supervision and professional medical support. We do not encourage copying the sport, as it should only be done under strict conditions.”
