The F-35 Lightning II, developed by Lockheed Martin, is considered one of the most advanced fighter jets in the world.

Available in three variants — F-35A (conventional, used by the USAF and allies), F-35B (short takeoff and vertical landing, for the USMC and navies) and F-35C (carrier-based version for US Navy aircraft carriers) — the aircraft combines cutting-edge technology, stealth, and multifunctional combat capability.

Check out 5 Facts about the F-35

1. First multinational “full stealth” fighter

The F-35 is the stealthiest combat aircraft currently in operation. Its design drastically reduces radar signature, allowing it to evade even the most advanced detection systems.

2. Helmet that replaces the cockpit

The F-35 pilot doesn’t rely only on internal panels: the HMD (Helmet Mounted Display) projects flight data, sensor imagery, and even a 360° view in augmented reality. Each unit costs about US$ 400,000.

3. Trillion-dollar program

The F-35 program is the most expensive in military history. It is estimated to have already surpassed US$ 1.7 trillion, including development, production, and lifetime maintenance of the fleet.

4. Hidden arsenal (or not)

To maintain stealth, the F-35 carries its weapons internally. It can load AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles and JDAM guided bombs, but it also supports up to 8 tons of external payload when discretion is not a priority.

5. Replacement for multiple fighters

Designed to provide a common platform for air and naval forces, the F-35 was created to replace renowned models such as the F-16, F/A-18, AV-8B Harrier, and A-10 Thunderbolt II, offering operational flexibility in a single system.
