According to scientists from the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York, July 2023 was 0.24 degrees Celsius (°C) hotter than any other recorded July by NASA, and it was 1.18°C warmer than the July average between 1951 and 1980.
“NASA’s data confirms what billions of people around the world literally felt: the temperatures in July 2023 made it the hottest month ever recorded. […] The science is clear. We must take action now to protect our communities and the planet; it’s the only one we have,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.
It’s worth noting that this record is part of a warming trend; according to NASA data, the five hottest Julys since 1880 have occurred in the past five years.
July 2023 was the hottest month on record, according to our global temperature analysis. Overall, July was 0.43°F (0.24°C) warmer than any other July in @NASAEarth‘s record, and it’s likely due to human activity. Details: https://t.co/2DTIfL8S1Q pic.twitter.com/qs8YPnVx1y
