On Monday night (16th), the NBA team Charlotte Hornets invited some people to the court during halftime of the game against the Philadelphia 76ers. The Hornets mascot, Hugo the Hornet, handed a PS5 to a boy as a Christmas gift, only for the gift to be taken from the child’s hands moments later. The video went viral on social media.
The mascot, dressed as Santa Claus, was handing out presents to young people and children who had written letters with Christmas gift requests.
A cheerleader handed a bag to the mascot with the PS5 the boy had asked for as his Christmas gift. The boy smiled, unable to believe his dream had come true. Seconds later, the PlayStation was swapped for a Hornets shirt.
The boy’s uncle, Alexei Phillips, told Queen City News that he and another adult responsible for the child were told that the boy “would not keep what he received” but would “get the shirt later.”
Phillips said he didn’t understand what would really happen and didn’t expect the PS5 to be taken out of the bag and replaced with a shirt. After the incident, he said everyone was in shock.
The Hornets team responded and apologized for what happened.
“We will provide the fan with the PS5 he should have taken home last night, along with a VIP experience at a future game,” they said in a statement.
“Simply put, we made a mistake and apologize,” they confessed.
