ByteDance, the Chinese company behind TikTok, is reportedly planning to shut down its operations in the United States if new rules come into effect, according to a CBS News report.

The legislation, which requires TikTok to be separated from its Chinese parent company and managed by an American company to continue operating in the United States, is set to take effect on January 19, just before Donald Trump’s inauguration.

The Supreme Court may overturn or delay the law that could lead to TikTok’s ban in the US. The main argument is that the law contradicts the First Amendment’s guarantee of freedom of speech. On the other hand, the federal government and legislators argue that TikTok poses a national security threat.

TikTok’s lawyers have argued that separating the app from ByteDance is not possible, and the company said in April that it would not sell the platform. President Trump has opposed the ban, but since his inauguration will happen after the law takes effect, there is little he can do except push for a delay.
