An ‘audio glasses’ device developed by EssilorLuxottica received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last Monday (3rd).
The device, called the Nuance Audio Hearing Aid Software, designed for adults with moderate hearing loss, is the first of its kind to receive approval from the American agency.
The glasses function as a discreet hearing aid that can be purchased without a prescription. Equipped with a microphone and beamforming technology, the device is capable of reducing ambient noise and amplifying the voice of the speaker.
Available in three shapes and two colors, they stand out for their versatility and discreteness. While designed for those with hearing loss, the manufacturer emphasized that the glasses can also be used by those who want clearer hearing in noisy environments.
“We didn’t just want to combine two medical devices – we created an entirely new form of smart glasses to support the two human senses we depend on the most. It’s not just innovative, it’s incredibly accessible,” said Francesco Milleri, President and CEO of EssilorLuxottica, in a statement.
According to the company, the innovative device will be available for purchase in several European countries, including France, Germany, Italy, and the UK, by the first quarter of 2025. In the U.S., sales are expected to begin in the first half of this year.
