A student from the University of Massachusetts ended up losing a $10,000 prize due to a small mistake after making an impressive basket in a basketball challenge.
The incident occurred last Wednesday (February 5) when Noah Lee, a student at the University of Massachusetts, took to the court during halftime of a women’s basketball game against St. Bonaventure to try his luck in a challenge promoted by Odds On Promotions.
The challenge was to make a layup, a free throw, a three-pointer, and a half-court shot in 30 seconds. Very difficult, but Lee apparently succeeded, according to a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) by Josh Schreiber.
However, one day after the impressive feat, the student received an email from the athletic representative at UMass saying that the company would not “pay” the prize because his foot was slightly outside the line, which made Lee, understandably, quite “disappointed.”
Lee’s video performing the challenge went viral, and internet users were also outraged by the news that he would not receive the prize, saying the student should have been informed of the rules by the company before the challenge, which apparently did not happen.
To make up for it, the university offered several prizes to Lee. Additionally, The Massachusetts Collective offered Lee another chance at the challenge, suggesting that he could win the $10,000 if he managed to do it again.
“At the end of the day, of course, it’s a bummer about the money, who knows how this will end with the $10,000. But these memories that we all kind of created because of this event are priceless, and I’ll definitely remember them for a long time,” Lee added.
