Chatbot responded to users with inappropriate words in Hindi, raising an alert at India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology

Grok AI, Elon Musk’s creation on X, formerly Twitter, is facing negative reactions. The reason? The Indian government is not happy because the bot responded to users with slang and profanity in Hindi, mentioning political figures such as PM Modi and Rahul Gandhi.

As a result, India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is analyzing Grok’s compliance with the 2021 IT Intermediary Rules, focusing on content moderation.

The AI’s legal protection under Section 79(1) of the IT Act could be revoked if it is deemed inactive in preventing illegal content.

“We are in contact, we are talking to them (X/Twitter) to find out why this is happening and what the issues are. They are engaging with us,” the PTI news agency cited ministry sources.

In one case, a user asked Grok a question but received no response. Persistent, they asked the chatbot again and added a Hindi swear word. When Grok replied, it also used the same swear word back at the user and told them to “stop crying now.”

Grok has the ability to converse in many languages. The bot often responds in informal or unconventional ways. Unlike Google’s Gemini and ChatGPT, Grok is reportedly not programmed to avoid profanity.
