No sous vide, no grill: Podcast host was stunned by the juicy steak cooked in a dishwasher
An Australian grilling enthusiast has taken cooking to the next level by preparing a juicy steak in the dishwasher, with a result that even surprised the biggest skeptics.
The unusual experiment was shared on Instagram and went viral thanks to *Under Seasoned BBQ* podcast host Simon Luxton. He said the original idea was meant to be an April Fool’s joke, but because the result turned out so good, they decided to take it seriously.
Luxton came up with the idea of trying the dishwasher inspired by the sous vide technique, where food is cooked slowly in a vacuum-sealed bag in hot water. He wanted to see if the warm and moist environment of the dishwasher could replicate the same effect.
“I put it on a regular cycle,” Luxton explained, saying he placed a ribeye steak in a vacuum-sealed bag in the upper rack of the dishwasher. “Of course, I didn’t add detergent, okay? This was meat, not dishes.”
After the cycle, he let the steak rest for 20 minutes, opened the bag, seasoned it with salt, pepper, and spices, then seared it in a pan with butter for just 90 seconds to get a crispy crust.
The result? “Absolutely incredible,” Luxton said, noting that even the fatty part of the steak was tender and juicy. The photos showed a perfectly cooked steak, with a rare and juicy inside, just like one you’d get at a restaurant.
While the experiment started as a joke, Luxton emphasized that if anyone is after the traditional grill flavor, a good grill is the best option. However, he couldn’t resist making a small remark: “But hey, if you’re washing your dishes anyway, why not throw in a steak?”
Reactions were mixed. Some were impressed, while others criticized the approach, saying it wasn’t really sous vide, but rather a “hasty steam cook.”
Still, similar videos began to appear, including one from *Cook With Meat* channel, which suggested cooking steaks in the dishwasher at 50°C for 90 minutes, finishing them on the stove for a final sear.
