São Gabriel da Cachoeira, a city in Amazonas, Brazil, has reintroduced the use of masks in enclosed spaces after a rise in Covid-19 cases.
The decree was issued by the city government on Friday (April 25) after the municipality recorded 400 positive cases just in the month of April. In December of last year, the number was only 14 confirmed cases.
The city also saw an increase in demand for testing, according to Agência Brasil. However, even negative results suggest that “other respiratory viruses are circulating in the city, putting the health of the population at risk.”
In addition to 897 suspected cases this month, one suspected death related to the disease is also under investigation. Should the numbers continue to rise, the city government has stated that it will not rule out the implementation of other containment measures.
