Christopher Pelkey, an American veteran who died in 2021 in a road rage incident, “forgave” his killer in a video generated with AI by his family.
The clip was shown in court during the sentencing hearing of Gabriel Paul Horcasitas, the man who shot Pelkey during the confrontation in Arizona.
Pelkey spoke directly to his killer in the video, which was generated using artificial intelligence by his sister, Stacey Wales, and her husband. He moved everyone when he “forgave” Horcasitas.
“It’s a shame we crossed paths that day under those circumstances. In another life, we might have been friends. I believe in forgiveness and in a God who forgives — I’ve always believed that, and I still do.”
Speaking to local news outlets, Stacey explained her decision to use AI to “bring” her brother back. “Trying […] to portray him as authentically as possible — that’s within our reach now. All I could think was, ‘What would Chris say?’”
Stacey also said that her children were emotional to see their uncle one last time in court. “That wasn’t the original intention, but the fact that it brought a healing peace to those who saw it was a very meaningful outcome.”
Judge Ann Timmer also commented on the use of AI in courtrooms. “AI has the potential to create great efficiency in the judicial system and can help people without legal knowledge present their arguments more effectively,” she explained.
“That’s why we’re excited about AI’s potential. But AI can also complicate or even harm justice if used improperly. A thoughtful approach is the best option.”
