In a recent interview, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, argued that he believes artificial intelligence will soon become more important than the internet.
The statement was made in a conversation with The Verge, shortly after this year’s Google I/O conference, whose main focus was the use of artificial intelligence tools and their impact on how we will browse the internet in the future.
“Before the internet, very few people had a way to express their thoughts to the world. With the internet, a new medium emerged that allowed people to create and express themselves in a new way,” he explained to the outlet.
“For me, a similar part of this is that we are all talking about things like coding. I think [in the future] people will be able to create AI apps, but that power hasn’t been unleashed yet.”
“We’re just scratching the surface, and these models aren’t there yet. (…) We will see a new wave of things, just like what happened with mobile devices. Just like what happened with the internet,” he added.
He emphasized that while AI’s expansion is happening on all levels, it is still in early stages, but he predicts its rapid evolution will cement its presence in more sectors within the next three to five years.
“I believe AI will be bigger than the internet. There will be companies, products, and categories created that we don’t know about today. I think the future looks promising. I believe there are many opportunities to innovate in terms of hardware formats right now,” Pichai said.
The Verge also recalled the recent partnership between Jony Ive, former Apple designer, and OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. They intend to launch an innovative “screenless” device that integrates artificial intelligence into people’s daily lives.
“I’m excited to see what they [OpenAI and Ive] will do. We will also do a lot. I think it’s an exciting time to be a consumer, it’s an exciting time to be a developer. I’m looking forward to it,” concluded Google’s CEO.
