A baby only four months old went viral after being filmed “saying” the name of his older sister.
In the video that became viral on social media, little Heitor appears “calling” his sister Laura and pronouncing her name impressively well for his age.
In an interview with Crescer magazine, Jaine, Heitor’s mother, said she heard her son call his sister for the first time while she was working.
“One day, I called my daughter to get him, but she didn’t hear. Then I said, ‘Hey, Laura’ louder, and he repeated it. I froze, I thought, ‘Am I crazy or did he say Laura?'” Jaine said.
Since then, Heitor has called his sister’s name every day, according to his mother. Although impressive, this behavior does not mean the baby is actually “talking,” explains speech therapist Juliana Gomes.
“At this stage, it is expected that the baby makes sounds like ‘ahhh,’ ‘uhhh,’ ‘eeee,’ begins to experiment with control of the mouth, tongue, and lips, makes grunts, laughs, and squeals. He already responds to sound stimuli, especially to the voice of parents and caregivers,” she told Crescer.
“[Babies] may try to imitate some movements of the lips, tongue, mouth, and expressions. That’s why, in the case of the baby who went viral, apparently, he is imitating the spoken word.”
“But what he did was manage to ‘imitate’ the movements of the speech organs in a similar way, giving the impression that he would say his sister’s name, which is not yet possible at four months,” added the expert.
