The man was walking alongside the animal, holding it by a chain. After kneeling down to take a photo with the tiger, the handler poked the feline with a stick-like object to position it.
The tourist then placed one of his arms around the tiger’s body and was immediately knocked down by the large cat.
The man screamed desperately for someone to get the tiger off of him. The person filming ran toward the tourist to try and push the animal away.
According to the post’s author, the man reportedly suffered only “minor injuries.”
Internet users were shocked by the footage, sparking debate over the use of captive animals in places like “zoos, interactive cafés, and breeding farms.”
The organization Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) released a report showing an “explosive” growth in the number of big cats in captivity. The number has more than tripled over the past seven years.
“The lack of proper oversight, the commercialization of exotic wildlife, and the use of lions in inappropriate public environments put both animals and the public at serious risk,” the report stated.
