A woman narrowly avoided a serious accident when the gate of her house came off its tracks and fell in her direction.
As shown in footage from a security camera, Carol Tavares, 30, had just opened the garage gate so her husband could drive out.
However, the gate slipped off the tracks and started to fall toward her. Fortunately, Carol had just taken a step forward to ask her husband something, which saved her from being crushed.
“Everything happened so fast. In that moment, I thought it was my final goodbye. I was in total panic,” she told Crescer magazine.
“I took a step toward the car to check if my [husband] could hear me and confirm whether he had picked up the snack – and the gate came crashing down.”
She said she didn’t know exactly how it fell and only remembered the sensation of “being hit with a sledgehammer.” It wasn’t until she was in the hospital and watched the security footage that she realized how serious it was.
Carol didn’t come out completely unscathed – the gate knocked her to the ground and injured her hand and foot. “It’s been over a month and I still can’t put full weight on my foot,” she said.
Fortunately, her injuries were minor and she is now recovering. Despite the scare, Carol said she’s grateful for the outcome, which could have been much worse.
