The FDA (Federal Drug Administration), the US regulatory agency, has approved the sale of lab-grown salmon to American consumers.
The salmon was produced by Wildtype, which received authorization from the agency to sell its fish to residents of Portland, Oregon.
According to the FDA, lab-grown salmon is “as safe as comparable foods produced by other methods.” “We are proud to share that we have completed a comprehensive pre-market safety consultation with the FDA. Transparency is important to us,” the company stated in a release.
The product is made by collecting living cells from Pacific salmon. In the lab, the cells grow and multiply in conditions similar to those of the fish. Then, “plant-based ingredients” are integrated into the salmon to improve flavor and texture.
Those wanting to try the delicacy will have to go to the Haitian restaurant Kann. To sell the lab-grown salmon, Gregoary Goudet and his team developed a dish with seasoned tomato, pickled strawberry, strawberry juice, and a rice cracker topped with a traditional Haitian seasoning.
According to Wildtype, four other restaurants in the region plan to add the fish to their menus in the coming months. The company was not the first to receive this type of approval. In 2022, the FDA approved lab-grown chicken meat production for two corporations.
