Donald Trump made a public statement criticizing Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, for manufacturing iPhones in India instead of the United States.
“I had a little problem with Tim Cook yesterday. He’s manufacturing all over India. I don’t want you building in India,” said the U.S. president during a trip to Qatar.
“I told him: ‘Look, Tim, we’ve treated you very well, we’ve put up with all the factories you built in China for years — now you need to build for us. (…) India can take care of itself, we want you manufacturing here.'”
According to Trump, the company agreed to “expand” the production of devices in the U.S. So far, Apple has not issued a public statement on the matter.
Despite Trump’s pressure, it would not be financially viable for Apple to produce iPhones in the United States. Studies show that Apple’s production costs could be up to 90% higher than if the iPhones were made in China.
This increase would then have to be passed on to consumers. And let’s be honest — no one would be willing to pay over $3,000 for an iPhone, meaning Apple would face unimaginable losses.
