According to Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, in an interview with Reuters, the increased spending on research and development was partly driven by their work on generative AI.
“We have been researching a wide range of AI technologies, including generative AI, for years. We will continue to invest, innovate, and responsibly advance our products with these technologies to help enrich people’s lives. Obviously, we are investing heavily, and that’s showing up in the R&D expenses you’re looking at.”
Apple’s AI
A few weeks ago, according to journalist Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple was reportedly working on its own generative AI tools to compete, for instance, with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. This AI would be integrated into Apple’s products and services in the future. The company already has its own framework and has been actively hiring specialized employees in this field.
