The asteroid YR4, which previously threatened Earth, is on a collision course with the Moon. According to scientists, the impact could occur in 2032.
Previously, scientific analyses indicated that the “city-destroying” asteroid could collide with Earth within a few years. After that, the chances increased, then decreased, and were eventually practically ruled out.
Recently, scientists revealed that while Earth would be off the asteroid’s path, the Moon could be hit in 2032. The latest projections indicate a collision probability of about 4%.
A new study revealed that the impact could cause a meteor shower, which in turn could damage satellite systems orbiting Earth.
Additionally, space rocks generated after the impact could fall on the lunar surface, potentially causing damage to equipment used for scientific missions on the Moon.
However, aside from damage to satellites, Pawan Kumar, an astronomer and former researcher at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics in Bengaluru, explained that any lunar debris launched into space would not pose a real danger to Earth.
