After an operation against a group selling stolen phones in São Paulo, the Brazilian police managed to recover more than 8,000 smartphones.
The operation by the Civil Police, which was nicknamed Big Mobile, began after gathering information from victims who had filed police reports for their stolen phones.
The police inspected hundreds of establishments in downtown São Paulo, focusing on repair shops and technical assistance stores.
Around 500 police officers worked on the operation and visited locations using real-time smartphone location tracking, which led them to the final destinations of the stolen devices.
After seizing more than 8,000 stolen phones, the Public Security Department (SSP) announced that they would set up a task force to locate and return the phones to their owners.
“We will increase the scope of this operation, we will continue to analyze both criminal organizations and check if these phones were involved in any other crimes, so we can get to the root of the problem,” said Artur Dian, General Director of the Civil Police.
