A report released last Tuesday (20th) revealed which jobs are at the highest risk of being replaced by artificial intelligence.

The research, conducted by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in partnership with Poland’s National Research Institute (NASK), showed that one in four jobs (25%) will be strongly affected by AI advancements.

The study categorized various professions into four levels, from lowest to highest exposure to AI. The highest risk was in what they call Gradient 4, while the lowest risk was in Gradient 1, with intermediate risk levels for Gradients 2 and 3.

According to the research, the jobs most affected by technological progress (Gradients 3 and 4) are those that already use a lot of technology daily, such as office assistant, accountant, financial analyst, translator, and journalist.

The list also included professions like web and multimedia developer, bank teller, economist, receptionist, meteorologist, medical secretary, typist, data entry assistant, payroll assistant, and statistics, finance, and insurance assistant.

The report, which analyzed 30,000 different tasks based on Poland’s job classification system, emphasized that most of these jobs still require human involvement, even with AI assistance. The study also revealed that the majority of jobs at risk are occupied by women.

As for professions at lower risk, the list included jobs like psychologist, photographer, physicist, astronomer, store sales assistant, hotel manager, medical assistant, and transportation driver.

Other low-risk jobs are: gas station attendant, legislator, mechanical engineer, musician, actor, chef, and flight attendant. However, it’s worth noting that even these professions, though at lower risk, still face some chance of automation by AI tools.

According to the report, only 3.3% of professions worldwide face a very high risk of AI exposure, but the study’s authors suggested that governments should take strategic and inclusive measures to protect the sectors currently most exposed.
