A man from Shanghai, China, lost more than $27,000 in a scam involving an AI-generated woman.

According to a report from CCTV, China’s state-run media, published last Wednesday (26), the man transferred about 200,000 yuan (approximately $27,580) to what he thought was his “girlfriend’s” bank account.

Using fake photos and videos, the criminals tricked the victim into believing that the “woman” needed funds to start a business and help her family pay medical bills.

To make the scam even more credible, the criminals also forged identities and medical records. The case is being investigated by local police, according to CCTV.

The report also mentioned that the criminal group is a “team of fraudsters who sent videos and photos created by AI or through combining multiple images.”
