Siemens Gamesa, a Spanish-German renewable energy company, has announced the operation of the world’s largest wind turbine.

The company reported the successful installation of a unit with a diameter of 276 meters at the wind turbine testing field of the Technical University of Denmark in Østerild.

Siemens’ SG DD-276 model, capable of producing 21.5 megawatts (MW) of power, joins a series of turbines competing for the title of the world’s most powerful—a title historically dominated by Chinese manufacturers.

The previous record for the world’s largest installed wind turbine was held by China’s Mingyang Smart Energy, which last year announced the successful installation of a 20 MW turbine, named MySE18.X-20MW.

The prototype turbine, part of the company’s Highly Innovative Prototype of the most Powerful Offshore Wind (HIPPOW) project, is powerful enough to supply electricity to 70,000 Danish households annually.

Additionally, the turbine, partially funded by the European Union (€30 million from an innovation fund focused on low-carbon technologies), can also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55,454 tons of CO2 equivalent over the project’s duration.
