Discord, the text, voice, and video communication platform widely used by online gaming communities, has laid off 17% of its workforce, approximately 170 people.

According to The Verge, CEO Jason Citron justified the layoffs in an internal memo, pointing to overhiring that led to disproportionate team expansion since 2020. Despite experiencing a significant increase in users during the pandemic, Discord has not yet achieved profitability.

This mass layoff is not the first for Discord; in August of the previous year, the platform also let go of around 40 employees in a restructuring that mainly affected areas such as marketing, design, and entertainment partnerships.
