Researchers from Shanghai Jiao Tong University have created innovative AI-powered glasses that can help blind people navigate safely.

In a study published in the journal Nature Machine Intelligence, scientists detailed the use of an integrated camera that, with the help of artificial intelligence, can map the user’s surroundings in real-time and assist blind or visually impaired people by creating routes to avoid obstacles.

The glasses then relay the information through voice commands and tactile signals, such as vibrations on artificial skin applied to the wrists and sounds sent through bone conduction headphones.

The device, which is being called “a smart cane,” could be particularly useful in urban environments where traditional canes face physical limitations and only detect obstacles that are very close.

It’s important to note that the device is still a prototype and requires some improvements to become useful and reliable for daily use.
