After the new rules established for the operation of TikTok in the United States, a new Chinese social network is said to be taking the place of the popular video app if it shuts down in the country.
Xiaohongshu, known as RedNote in the West, rose to the top of the Apple App Store‘s most downloaded apps list in the U.S. on Tuesday (January 14).
This comes after ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, stated it would shut down the app in the U.S. rather than sell it to an American company, as the government had suggested.
According to research company Qian Gua, Xiaohongshu is one of the most successful apps in China. It was founded in 2013 but had not gained significant fame in the West until now.
The app gained popularity as many Americans are seeking alternatives to TikTok, which may shut down its operations in the U.S. next week. The new rules are set to take effect on Sunday (19).
The so-called “TikTok refugees” are posting videos on the Chinese platform as an act of rebellion against the U.S. government. “This is much better than TikTok,” admitted a user on RedNote.
“Our government is crazy if they think we’re going to accept this TikTok ban. We’re just switching to a new Chinese app, and here we are,” said another post, which received over 45,000 likes.
