The 43-year-old drug trafficker, who had been wanted by the U.S., was arrested on December 29 at the London airport after being accused of smuggling cocaine from Limón, Costa Rica, to the U.S., according to the Nicaraguan newspaper La Prensa.
Grijalba, who also goes by the codename Shock, had been on the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) radar for several months due to his alleged involvement in international drug trafficking.
Shock almost never traveled with his wife (for obvious reasons), but decided to purchase $20,000 worth of tickets for his family to go to Europe. He met Estefania in Paris and planned to spend New Year’s in the United Kingdom before being arrested.
According to The Sun, Estefania made a series of now-deleted posts about the luxurious trip on her social media. One of the posts showed the couple posing under the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
DEA agents, who had been tracking Grijalba since his departure from Costa Rica’s Juan Santamaría Airport, used the couple’s post from Paris to locate the alleged drug lord, according to the Costa Rican channel Teletica.
Grijalba appeared in court the day after his arrest and is currently fighting his extradition to the U.S., where he may face a lengthy prison sentence, The Sun reported.
