Elon Musk, who has the ambitious plan to colonize the surface of Mars, opened up about what he believes is the future of the human race on planet Earth.

The 53-year-old entrepreneur and owner of SpaceX shared his plans in an interview with FOX News last Monday (May 5).

“Eventually, all life on Earth will be destroyed by the Sun. The Sun is gradually expanding, so at some point we need to become a multiplanetary civilization, because Earth will be incinerated,” Musk argued.

It may sound alarmist, but scientists have previously confirmed the hypothesis that the Sun will expand up to 1,000 times its current size and that, when that happens, Earth will be destroyed “instantly.”

However, according to an article published in The Astrophysical Journal, the phenomenon is not expected to occur for several billion years — so none of us will be around to witness it.

Still, Musk highlights Mars as a “sufficiently self-sustaining” destination to house humans when Earth is no longer habitable — a project he calls “life insurance for collective life.”

His idea is to build a civilization on Mars capable of thriving even if supply ships from Earth stop arriving for any reason. “If resupply ships are needed for Mars to survive, then we haven’t created a life insurance policy.”

“So that is the key point in the future when the fate of life as we know it will be forever changed: when Mars becomes self-sustaining,” the entrepreneur added.
