The firefighters from Sanibel Island, Florida, USA, had to rescue a turtle that got stuck in a sewer, and the unusual rescue entertained the web.
A few days before Christmas, Captain Robert Wilkins and his team received an unusual call. According to Wilkins, a local resident asked for the fire department’s help because a turtle had been stuck in a sewer near a shopping mall for several days.
Wilkins told a local TV crew about the animal rescue:
*”The call came into the firehouse, and the woman was obviously upset,”* Wilkins said. *”She was telling us that the turtle was in a sewer and had been there for three or four days. She had called several people to help, but no one came.”*
The firefighters found the turtle surrounded by mud and dirt, and to get the animal out of the sewer, Wilkins’ team removed the protective grate, and one of the firefighters was lowered into the sewer.
Firefighter Allen Schelm was held by his legs by his colleagues, who lowered him until he could reach the animal, which was finally pulled out of the sewer.
With the help of the local police department, the teams were able to safely rescue the turtle and return it to a nearby lake. The Sanibel Fire Department shared footage of the rescue on their Facebook page.
