OpenAI, the company responsible for ChatGPT, has been sued (once again) for copyright infringement. The lawsuit includes renowned literary figures such as George R. R. Martin, the author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, which inspired the series Game Of Thrones and House Of The Dragon.

According to The Verge, the lawsuit was initiated by the Authors Guild, the largest and oldest professional organization for writers in the United States, along with 17 well-known authors, such as Jonathan Franzen, John Grisham, and Jodi Picoult.

The writers filed a collective action in the Southern District of New York, alleging that OpenAI had copied their works “without permission or consideration” and used them to feed the chatbot.

The authors also claim that OpenAI could generate derivative works “based on, summarizing, or paraphrasing” their works, which could harm their market.

OpenAI has been facing numerous copyright-related lawsuits. The company stated in a statement to The Verge that it is engaged in productive discussions with the authors “to understand and discuss their concerns with AI.”
