Alphabet, Google’s parent company, laid off hundreds of employees last Thursday (10) from its platforms and devices unit, which works with Android, Pixel phones, and the Chrome browser.

The information was released by the portal The Information on Friday (11), citing a source familiar with the matter.

The layoffs follow Google‘s offers made in January to employees of the unit, which is undergoing a restructuring, according to the report.

“Since we merged the platforms and devices teams last year, we have focused on becoming more agile and operating more effectively, which included some job reductions, in addition to the voluntary exit program we offered in January,” said a Google spokesperson to The Information.

Experts suggest that this is part of a move by large tech companies, which have been redirecting spending toward data centers and AI development while reducing investments in other areas of their business.

It is worth noting that in January 2023, Alphabet announced plans to cut 12,000 jobs, or 6% of its global workforce.
