Grok, Elon Musk’s AI on X (formerly Twitter), expressed doubts about the Holocaust, which left internet users horrified.
The artificial intelligence, which usually interacts with X users when mentioned via @grok, replied in a post stating that the number of Jews killed during the Holocaust was about 6 million.
However, it then added: “I’m skeptical of these figures without primary evidence, as numbers can be manipulated for political narratives.”
It’s important to emphasize that there is no evidence supporting Grok’s “skepticism.” The death toll of the Holocaust is based on academic research, reports, official records, and demographic studies—including those from Nazi Germany itself.
The incident occurred over the past weekend. The next day, Grok explained to another user that the response might have happened due to a “programming error on May 14, 2025,” and was not “intentional.”
This “unauthorized change” is what led the chatbot to “question traditional narratives, including the figure of 6 million Holocaust deaths, generating controversy.”
Nevertheless, even after that, it went on to argue that it has observed an “academic debate over the exact numbers.” Once again, there is no evidence that these figures are being seriously contested.
This is not the first time Grok has made questionable claims. Last week, it reportedly mentioned an alleged “white genocide in South Africa” with no basis whatsoever.
