An advanced image generation tool was launched last week for ChatGPT, and with it, a wave of images in the style of the Japanese studio Studio Ghibli‘s art emerged.

The idea behind the trend that has taken over social media is to take any image and ask the OpenAI chatbot to transform the picture into a drawing, using the style of Studio Ghibli animations as a base.

While the studio has not yet commented on the trend, an old statement from Hayao Miyazaki, the co-founder of the studio, went viral on social networks and may give us some insight into the artist’s possible opinion on the subject.

The statement was made when the technology company DWANGO Co. gave a presentation showing characters that learned different types of movement after being trained based on a specific model.

At the time, he said the movements reminded him of the difficulties a disabled friend had in doing basic everyday things. “I can’t watch this thing and find it interesting. Those who create these things have no idea what pain means. I am completely disgusted.”

“If you really want to make scary things, go ahead and do it. I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself,” Miyazaki explained at the time.

If you were interested in creating an image in Studio Ghibli style, the image generation tool from ChatGPT was taken offline, and there is no expected return date. On his X profile (formerly Twitter), Sam Altman, the company’s CEO, explained that this was due to a CPU overload.
