Honda, the Japanese automobile manufacturer, announced that it is expanding its operations beyond planet Earth.

In collaboration with the space technology companies Sierra Space and Tec-Masters, Honda will send its hydrogen technologies to the International Space Station, according to a report by the site The Verge.

The test is part of an initiative by the automaker to support life on the Moon and other celestial bodies using regenerative fuel cell technologies that continuously produce hydrogen, oxygen, and electricity.

According to them, their regenerative hydrogen system could be seen as an essential part of a future human settlement on the Moon’s surface. Moreover, by testing the systems in space, the manufacturer will also be able to prove their usefulness on Earth.

The system will use energy generated by solar panels during the lunar day and then use high-pressure electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen and oxygen. When the Moon moves away from the Sun, part of the oxygen will be used by astronauts, while the rest will be used to generate energy.

On Earth, Honda intends to use the technology in its cars. While producing hydrogen-powered vehicles has proven to be a real challenge, the company plans to implement the technology by 2040.
