A “final selfie” trend that has taken over social media is costing hundreds of lives.

The trend involves going to a truly dangerous place to take an “impressive” selfie. The locations people choose are often cliff edges or near waterfalls.

However, instead of ending up with a perfect shot that would generate many likes on social media, many of these attempts to join the trend have ended in tragedy.

Over the years, Wikipedia has managed to keep a record of all the stories that have emerged globally about people who lost their lives while trying to take the “ultimate selfie.”

With data from 2008 to 2021, the number was estimated at 379 people. However, it is believed that this number has increased to around 480. Even so, people continue to participate in the trend.

Steve Cole, policy director at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), explained that falling from great heights appears to be the leading cause of death for most people attempting to take their “last selfie.”

“This trend of taking selfies in dangerous locations, such as at the edge of cliffs or during extreme weather conditions, is a concerning behavior,” he said.

“The appeal of social media recognition often leads individuals to take these unnecessary risks, underestimating the potential dangers involved.”
