Walmart has become the target of criticism on social media after starting to use a “security robot” to guard parking lots at several of its stores in the United States.
A video shared on TikTok shows the moment a customer spotted one of the security robots patrolling the parking lot of a Walmart store in Bentonville, Arkansas.
The TikToker is seen following the robot through the parking lot and asking some questions, while also capturing other customers who were equally interested in the unusual novelty.
Due to tariffs imposed by Donald Trump on imported products, Walmart’s CEO, Doug McMillon, warned that product prices would likely rise on shelves, despite attempts to absorb some of the costs of the new taxes.
The introduction of security robots made consumers even more upset. “That’s why prices are going up,” lamented one TikTok user.
“Walmart will do anything to avoid paying anyone,” joked another. “We should have kept our local supermarkets running,” argued a third internet user.
While most users expressed dissatisfaction, others pointed out that Walmart is not the first to use this kind of technology. “The hospital where my wife works has had robots like this for five years,” said one user.
