An artist went viral after selling an “invisible sculpture” for $18,000 and even providing the buyer with a “certificate of authenticity” to prove it was real.
Salvatore Garau, an Italian sculptor, sold his sculpture titled “Io Sono“, which means “I Am” in Italian, for approximately $18,000 to an unidentified buyer in May 2021.
The sale was organized by the Italian auction house Art-Rite, which described the piece as an “immaterial” statue. “The vacuum is nothing more than a space full of energy,” Garau explained, according to Hypebeast.
“Even if we empty it and nothing remains, according to Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, that ‘nothing’ has weight. Therefore, it has energy that condenses and transforms into particles — in other words, into us.”
This isn’t the first “immaterial” artwork Garau has created. “Buddha in Contemplation,” an earlier project by the artist, was also “invisible” and marked with a square of tape when it was exhibited on a sidewalk in Milan.
“You don’t see it, but it exists; it’s made of air and spirit. It’s a work that asks you to activate the power of imagination — a power everyone has, even those who think they don’t.”
