Hong, a man from Ningbo, China, donated his family savings and $316,000 in stolen money in hopes of getting a streamer to say his name. He spent nearly half a million dollars to attract the influencer’s attention.
In early 2024, he developed an obsession with an influencer on a live-streaming platform and started spending large amounts of money on donations and tips for the streamer.
According to Melt Water, the influencer is a professional capable of influencing public opinion on topics, products, or services.
After spending all his money and his family’s savings, Hong started stealing money from his family’s business to support his addiction. In May, he began taking copper to the scrapyard in exchange for money.
Hong’s family warned that savings were being stolen. The thief was his own son.
“I didn’t want to meet her; I just wanted to hear her call me ‘brother,’” Hong told the South China Morning Post.
