A woman was completely shocked after being proposed to by her partner during her friend’s wedding, sparking an online debate about whether this kind of behavior is appropriate.

In a TikTok video showing the scene, Alyssa Fowler is at a friend’s wedding in Jacksonville, Florida, when her boyfriend, Josh Stepherson, unexpectedly got down on one knee in the middle of the dance floor.

The bride, who was right behind the couple, was stunned when she realized what was happening. Fowler quickly turned to the bride and asked if her boyfriend had asked for permission to propose.

“No, he didn’t ask, but that’s okay! Say yes!” replied the bride. Fowler then accepted the proposal and hugged Josh while the newlyweds celebrated in the background before approaching to hug the couple.

In the video comments, which has over 2.5 million views, most internet users criticized Fowler’s boyfriend’s action, calling the proposal “lazy” and “disrespectful.”

“Your boyfriend is so uncreative that he couldn’t find a unique way to do this for you? This looks so hillbilly trailer-park,” argued one TikTok user. “He didn’t plan it, didn’t spend money on it. Just laziness,” said another.

Despite the criticism, Fowler told People magazine that the newlyweds were not bothered by the proposal. “It was a spur-of-the-moment decision. They were both very happy for us,” she said.

She also shared that Josh had planned to propose the night before but it didn’t work out. So he already had the ring in his pocket and decided to propose during the party.

Although she admits it’s not “typically acceptable,” she asked people to think twice before commenting nonsense, especially when they don’t know the full story.
