Japanese photographer Ryo Minemizu explores the marine world during night dives and reveals the illuminated beauty of plankton in stunning images.

His photographs capture the vibrant tones and almost alien features of some of the smallest creatures in the world. For this, Minemizu searches in Japan and other regions of the Pacific for specimens never seen before.

Liocranchia reinhardti

In an interview with Colossal, a site dedicated to art, the photographer spoke about his work and his partnership with researchers; “Although I only dive to depths of up to 25 meters, each dive now represents an opportunity to find young deep-sea fish and jellyfish in forms that most of humanity has never seen before.”

“I am fortunate to report some of these remarkable discoveries every year in collaboration with researchers,” he said.

Unfortunately, in his marine explorations, Minemizu increasingly encounters unwanted material in the form of trash, especially plastic, which negatively impacts marine life offshore.

“Now we regularly dive in oceanic areas where humans have never ventured and yet, even in such remote regions, we are finding plastic waste transported by human activity,” he explains.

“I am deeply concerned about the real and significant impact this is having on the lives of these creatures.”
