After many rumors on the topic, Mark Zuckerberg officially announced the new “superintelligence” division within Meta.

According to a memo obtained by the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal, the project will be led by Alexandr Wang, former CEO of Scale who was recently hired by Meta, and by Nat Friedman, former CEO of Github.

Wang will serve as the artificial intelligence director at the Meta Superintelligence Labs, while Friedman will lead the company’s work on AI products, according to the memo sent to employees.

“As the pace of AI progress accelerates, the development of superintelligence is approaching,” the CEO wrote in the internal memo.

“I believe this will be the start of a new era for humanity, and I am fully committed to doing whatever it takes for Meta to lead the way.”

The official announcement of Meta’s superintelligence labs comes after it was revealed that Zuckerberg has been contacting well-known people in the tech market via WhatsApp to recruit them for the project.

The team will also include several people from OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, two from Google DeepMind, and one from Anthropic. According to TWSJ, Meta also hired three more employees from OpenAI at its Zurich office.
