McDonald’s is modernizing its restaurants through the use of artificial intelligence, according to a report from the newspaper The Wall Street Journal.

The fast-food chain is integrating AI into its internet-connected kitchen equipment and in the drive-thru service, as well as providing artificial intelligence to its managers.

Brian Rice, the company’s IT director, explained that with this change, McDonald’s aims to improve the experience for both customers and employees, who face challenges with broken machines and incorrect orders.

Now, with the help of technology, restaurants will be able to predict failures in kitchen equipment, such as deep fryers and ice cream machines, and use computer vision to check the accuracy of orders.

AI will also be used to assist managers with administrative tasks, such as work schedules, and for service in the drive-thrus. All data will be processed locally with Google Cloud.

It is important to note that these changes come at a delicate time for McDonald’s in terms of sales in the U.S. With AI, they plan to increase the number of customers from 175 million to 250 million by 2027.
