Officially cataloged as M31, the Andromeda Galaxy is the closest spiral galaxy to the Milky Way, located approximately 2.5 million light-years away. This means that the light we see from the galaxy, appearing as a faint spot in the night sky, has traveled for over two million years to reach our eyes.

The highlighted image by NASA is a carefully composed combination of background and foreground, captured consecutively by the same camera and in the same location, taken by Dzmitry Kananovich.

Andromeda is larger than the Milky Way and is on a collision course with our galaxy, a cosmic event predicted to occur in a few billion years.
