The NASA has revealed the X-59, a supersonic jet resulting from a six-year partnership with Lockheed Martin. The aircraft aims to break the sound barrier silently, avoiding the traditional sonic boom associated with supersonic planes.

With a length of 30.3 meters and a width of 8.99 meters, the X-59 features a conical nose designed to break shockwaves, preventing the characteristic sonic boom. Equipped with a General Electric engine, the jet can reach speeds exceeding an incredible 1,440 km/h, and flight tests are expected to commence later this year.

The X-59 is part of NASA’s Quest mission, based in Palmdale, California, and aims to collect data that could revolutionize air travel, enabling the development of commercial aircraft capable of traveling faster than the speed of sound.

The Quest mission not only seeks to develop the X-59 but also aims to demonstrate the feasibility of supersonic flights without the sonic impact that led to the ban on supersonic flights over Earth more than 50 years ago. Test results will be shared with regulators and the industry, potentially influencing the review of speed limits for civilian planes based on the sonic perception of the X-59.
