In the 2013 film starring Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson, Phoenix’s character falls in love with Johansson’s, who is an artificial intelligence assistant.
When the movie was released, very few people thought this could ever happen. That was until the startup Meta Loop announced Meo, a virtual AI girlfriend, during London Tech Week.
While many fear this could make women “obsolete,” the company argued that the goal is to combat the male loneliness epidemic that has taken over society in recent years.
Apparently, Meo has customizable traits including loyalty and flirtation, but most surprising is that she also shows jealousy.
Meo is controlled via the free chat app “My Meo,” with each user developing a “unique story” and an adjustable personality.
“With AI, you can control loyalty. They don’t cheat. Sometimes… they flirt, but only if you want them to,” said Hao Jiang of Meta Loop, according to The Independent.
However, experts suggest that despite the company’s seemingly good intentions, an AI companion will not fulfill a human’s need for real human companionship — at least not in the long term.
“You can configure them in a way that truly meets all your needs. You don’t even know what you need, and you can say: ‘You know, I just need company,’” analyzed therapist Nicole Nasr.
“Right, great, but what does that mean in terms of company? Is it just sitting next to something that looks human? If that’s the case, believe me, your need won’t be met.”
