The organizers of the New York Road Runners event canceled the New Year’s Eve 500-drone show planned for Central Park after a 7-year-old boy was struck by a drone during a Christmas show in Orlando, Florida.
New York Road Runners spokesperson Crystal Howard said they are working to “ensure that runners have a memorable time celebrating the arrival of 2025” during the traditional midnight race in Central Park.
The reason was not specified, but the organization said, “Due to circumstances beyond our control, we will no longer be holding the planned drone show during the race.”
On Saturday (21st), a 7-year-old boy named Alezander was hit by a drone in the chest and face during a Christmas show in Orlando. The child had to undergo hours of heart surgery after being electrocuted by the devices.
The company Sky Elements Drones, responsible for the Florida show, is now under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and was allegedly also hired for the event in Central Park.
