Trump’s idea, expected to cost at least $175 billion, was inspired by Israel’s “Iron Dome” and is described as a “missile shield” for the United States to protect against enemy attacks.
Planned for completion by 2029, coinciding with the end of Trump’s term, the Golden Dome defense system would include both ground and space-based capabilities to detect and stop missiles in all four main phases of a potential attack.
This includes detecting and destroying a missile before launch, intercepting during the early flight stage, stopping them mid-flight, and deterring them in the final moments of their trajectory.
Following the announcement, Pyongyang’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the program is “very dangerous,” accusing Trump of “threatening the state’s strategic security with nuclear weapons.”
The statement was given to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) and shared with AFP. The Foreign Ministry also accused the United States of being “obsessed with militarizing outer space.”
“The U.S. plan to build a new missile defense system is the root cause of triggering a global nuclear and space arms race, as it stimulates the security concerns of nuclear-armed countries and turns […] outer space into a potential field of nuclear warfare.”
China also commented on the American plan. “The United States, by pursuing an ‘America First’ policy, is obsessed with seeking absolute security for itself,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning.
“This violates the principle that the security of all countries should not be compromised and undermines global strategic balance and stability. China is seriously concerned about this,” she added, before calling on Washington to completely abandon the development of the Golden Dome.
