The Rogfast, the world’s deepest submarine tunnel, is an ongoing construction project by the Norwegian government to connect the districts of Randaberg and Bokn in 35 minutes via a 26-kilometer passage at a depth of over 396 meters.

The tunnel has a budget of $1.97 billion and aims to eliminate part of the route from Trondheim in the north to Kristiansand in the south, which is currently done by ferry. Rogfast will be part of the coastal highway E39 route.

The journey from Trondheim to Kristiansand used to take around 21 hours due to interruptions caused by bad weather at sea. The tunnel will reduce this travel time by 11 hours, according to the British newspaper The Telegraph.

Project manager Oddvar Kaarmo said that when construction is completed, “we will no longer need to depend on good weather to keep the roads open.”

Construction began in 2018 but was delayed due to the pandemic.

Around 40% of the Rogfast costs will be financed by the Norwegian government, with the remaining amount covered by a toll estimated at $37 per passage. The project is expected to be completed in 2033.
