The incident occurred on Friday (20th), when authorities responded to a call to assist Springhill Suites hotel staff in evacuating a room.

The suspect, identified as Leonard Pitchford, exited the room without clothing as officers pointed their weapons at him.

That’s when Officer Xiong saw a fire inside the room. Police Chief Robert Schroder was holding a fire extinguisher and handed it to his colleague, who entered and extinguished the flames.

Investigators from the Louisville Metro Police Bomb Squad found two additional explosive devices during a sweep of the room, according to police.

Schroder praised Officer Xiong’s actions. “I can’t say enough about Officer Xiong’s bravery in going into that room, because as the investigation revealed, there were more explosive devices inside,” the chief added.

Pitchford was charged with 43 counts of first-degree wanton endangerment and one count of using a weapon of mass destruction.

No one was injured in the incident.
